Sculptra & Radiesse: rebuild your own collagen
Biostimulators don’t just fill. They prompt your fibroblasts to make new collagen, so skin becomes thicker, firmer and more supported over the following months.

How biostimulators work
Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). It is a dissolvable material that triggers a gentle repair response, and your body lays down new collagen around it. Results appear gradually over two to three sessions spaced about 4–6 weeks apart.
Radiesse is calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres in a gel. It gives some immediate lift and stimulates collagen over time. Diluted (“hyperdilute”) Radiesse is also used to improve skin quality on the face, neck and chest.
Who they suit
- Overall facial volume loss and thinning skin
- Laxity in the lower face, neck or décolleté
- Facial hollowing after weight loss or GLP-1 medications
- People who want gradual change that friends notice but can’t name
What the newest research shows
A 2025 gene-expression study compared the two in the nasolabial folds. PLLA switched on extracellular-matrix and regenerative genes with minimal inflammation, while CaHA showed a more pro-inflammatory profile. Both are effective. These differences help Dr. Mitra match the product to your skin and goals.
The inside-out advantage
Collagen needs raw materials. Vitamin C, adequate protein, zinc and copper, steady blood sugar and healthy hormone levels all affect how much collagen your body can build. That is why biostimulator plans here include a look at nutrition, glycation and hormones.
Safety
Expect swelling, tenderness or bruising for a few days. Sculptra requires massaging the area at home for several days afterward to keep it smooth. Small bumps (nodules) are an uncommon risk. Biostimulators are not used in the lips. Performed by Dr. Mitra Tahvildarian, AGNP-C, under the supervision of a licensed medical doctor.
What to expect
Skin assessment and a decision on PLLA, CaHA or a combination.
Treatment takes about 30–45 minutes. With Sculptra, you massage at home for a few days.
Spaced 4–6 weeks apart, depending on your degree of volume loss.
New collagen develops over 3–6 months. A maintenance session is typically done every 1–2 years.
PLLA triggered regeneration while CaHA induced more inflammation after facial injection, in a gene-analysis study of 21 patients.

How is Sculptra different from filler?
Hyaluronic acid filler adds volume immediately. Sculptra stimulates your own collagen, so results build over months and look very natural.
How many Sculptra sessions will I need?
Most people need two or three sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, depending on age and volume loss.
How long do Sculptra and Radiesse last?
Results commonly last up to about two years, with occasional maintenance.
Can it help after weight loss or Ozempic?
Yes. Biostimulators are one of the best options for overall facial hollowing after significant weight loss.
